ROUND 18

Bruny vs. Sandy Bay (Away)

Sandy Bay defeated Bruny 14 - 0 (119 to 72 shots)

Bruny's aspirations of making the Final Four in Division 2 were shattered at Sandy Bay in Round 18 on Saturday. The season for Bruny ended as it started with demoralising losses in both games. In Round one on a slow wet New Norfolk green Bruny suffered a 14 nil defeat losing by 71 shots.

After driving to Sandy Bay in pouring rain and with expectations of a washout the rains cleared and the game commenced on a wet, slow but flat green. Sandy Bay, which occupied second last spot on the Pennant ladder, revelled in the slow conditions and posted a 47 shot win. One of Bruny's rinks looked as if it was going to get a face saving win and 2 points for the Club but when Skip Chris Martyn's excellent shot holding final bowl was beaten by Sandy Bay skip's final bowl those hopes were dashed.

Bruny's loss was a disappointment but especially so for 87 year old Ashley Cooper who was playing his final Pennant Game after 26 years playing for Bruny. Ashley did however consider making himself available for future games if ever the Club is short of players. He insists he is going to remain a member of the Club

Ashley has occupied the Lead position for all those years and was well respected and often feared by his opponents. He has won several Club Singles Championships and for many years was the Bruny Club Delegate at STBA meetings. For that the STBA awarded Ashley a Special Merit Certificate.

Upon arriving back at the Clubrooms the bowlers enjoyed fellowship to mark the end of the season.
